Pulmonary function tests (PFTs) are an essential tool used in the diagnostic work-up of respiratory symptoms such as cough and breathlessness. They are also used to assess the severity of known lung conditions such as asthma, airways diseases and interstitial lung diseases.
PFTs are comprised of several specific breathing manoeuvres, each measuring different functions of the lung, such as the flow rate of air in your lungs, the volume of the lungs and the ability of your lungs to carry oxygen into your blood. While PFTs are not invasive tests, occasionally some people may experience some temporary discomfort with breathing. This will usually be brief and will not affect your lungs. During the test, you will be guided by scientists on how to perform the test properly.
