Cough
Cough is a normal reflex that helps to keep the lungs clear, however if a cough persists beyond 3 months or is intrusive it should be investigated further. There is a wide range of causes of cough and the treatment depends on the cause.
Wheeze
Wheeze is a whistling sound that occurs during breathing. It is caused by narrowing of the airways which occurs in conditions such as asthma and COPD/emphysema. It may be accompanied by a sensation of chest tightness.
Breathlessness
An uncomfortable sensation during breathing which can be experienced as feeling out of breath, out of puff, or difficulty getting enough air into the lungs. Shortness of breath (dyspnoea) can be caused by problems in the lungs, heart, and/or blood and requires investigation.
Sleepiness
The sensation of needing to, or tendency to, fall asleep too easily or inappropriately. It is different to fatigue which is a feeling of being washed out or generally exhausted. Tiredness is a term which is also sometimes used to describe sleepiness. If you have excessive daytime sleepiness, investigation with a sleep study is required.
Snoring
A noise made by vibration of the upper airway collapsing during sleep. Snoring can be a sign of obstructive sleep apnoea. Investigation with a sleep study may be appropriate.
Insomnia
Difficulty getting to sleep or staying asleep.
