Pulmonary Vascular Conditions

Pulmonary embolus

A pulmonary embolism (PE) is a blood clot that blocks blood flow to an artery in the lung. In most cases, the blood clot starts in a deep vein in the leg and travels to the lung. When a blood clot forms in one or more of the deep veins in the body, it’s called a deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Pulmonary embolism is potentially life-threatening and treatment is with medications to thin the blood.

Pulmonary hypertension

Pulmonary hypertension is high blood pressure in the lungs. Patients often feel fatigued with shortness of breath. There are many causes of pulmonary hypertension and treatment is different depending on the underlying cause. In pulmonary hypertension, the heart must work harder to pump blood through the lungs. The extra effort eventually causes the heart muscle to become weak and fail
